Usage of video based learning has been used fairly extensively in eLearning. Video based learning continues to be in the top 3 preferred formats for learning.

What is interesting to note is the significant position it is gaining as an effective tool for both formal and informal learning. It is also being used to support Instructor Lead Training (ILT) or Virtual Instructor Lead Training (VILT).

In this blog, I show you 5 different approaches to integrate Video Based Learning for corporate training. These approaches will help you achieve higher learner engagement and see the desired performance gain.

Background

The following statement summarises the value Video based learning brings in very effectively:

In addition to enhancing learning, video can also reduce training time. It’s easier and takes less time to watch a well-made video than it does to read through pages of dense text or complicated diagrams to grasp a concept. – Andy Cole

Are there any challenges associated with Video based learning?

Videos are universally acknowledged as an effective medium for training. The Video based learning predominantly uses the Scenario Based Learning (SBL). These range from simple scenarios to highly complex decision making, branching scenarios.

However, there are certain challenges associated with Video based learning:

  • Passivity of videos makes it difficult to integrate measures to retain the learning (and more significantly validate the learning)
  • Expensive to produce and have a longer associated development cycle

How can the challenges associated with Video based learning be offset?

Offsetting challenge 1: The first challenges can be easily offset through Interactive Videos that offer 10X impact over traditional Video based learning. Similar to degree of interaction that is possible in a typical eLearning or mLearning based course, you can have:

  1. Interactions (Hot spots, click to reveal, explore and learn and so on)
  2. Interim knowledge checks
  3. Branching based on learner’s selections
  4. End of program assessments
  5. Tracking (SCORM based)

All of these measures help you create Video based training that is:

  1. High impact
  2. Multi-device (runs across devices ranging from desktops or laptops to tablets and smartphones)
  3. Engaging
  4. Will create sticky learning experience
  5. Will help you reach the desired mandate (skill enhancement or performance gain)
  6. Can be tracked to assess learner’s engagement and performance

You can use also Interactive videos to support ILT/VILT training. This can be done in two ways:

  1. Instructor recording can be converted into an interactive Video based learning
VILT Interactive Video Sample 1VILT Interactive Video Sample 2
  2. Performance Support Tools (PSTs or learning aids): To support pre-workshop or engagement post workshop

Offsetting challenge 2: You can use Videos based learning beyond the classic format (where you had to shoot through a cast of characters) to other interesting formats that are particularly useful for informal learning.

Some of the key formats that you can use to easily leverage on Video based learning are:

      1. Explainer videos: They can be used to summarise the formal training and can be used highly effectively to reinforce learning (post the completion of formal training).
      2. Whiteboard animations based videos: They can be used to support formal training (pre or post formal training). They can also be used as part of a traditional eLearning or mLearning course to outline certain key concepts).
      3. Kinetic text animations based videos: This approach can be used as a very effective Performance Support Tool (PST or job-aids) that can be provided within the learner’s workflow. They can be simple cheat sheets, Ready reckoners, Checklists and so on.
