Strategies to integrate Informal learning

Introduction

Most organisations use the 70-20-10 model for Learning and Development to design optimal training for its employees. In this blog, I use the background of this model and showcase how you can leverage on Informal learning in the workplace to enhance your Formal learning (particularly eLearning).

What is the 70-20-10 model for Learning and Development?

The 70-20-10 model for Learning and Development is used worldwide to improve the effectiveness of training. Today, it is used as a significant learning strategy to enhance employee performance and thereby create a strong value for business.

According to this model,

  1. The bulk of our learning (70%) is Experiential learning that is through on-the-job experiences.
  2. The second trench of learning is with or from others, or Social learning. This is pegged at 20%.
  3. The balance 10% learning is through structured or Formal

Where does Informal learning fit in the 70-20-10 model for Learning and Development?

Informal learning or self-directed learning, which is impromptu and driven by the learner’s curiosity, need or self-growth, finds its space and adds value in the first two ways we learn.

This is not all. Informal learning in the workplace can also be used to support Formal learning (particularly eLearning).

How can you leverage on Informal learning in your eLearning programs?

You can integrate Informal learning in workplace by blending eLearning programs with components of Informal learning. This will pave way for higher learner engagement and motivation.

For example,

  1. Use it for Pre-learning or prep for the online training or ILT sessions
  2. Conduct Group discussions with seniors or peers (sessions that are designed to be part of the schedule of the online training)
  3. Reconnect and Reinforce (post the online training session)
  4. Organise Design Thinking Workshops: To promote the application of learning.
  5. Add Mentoring, Coaching or even incidental support to the online training
  6. Leverage on the collaboration features of your LMS to provide connects, discussions, curation and active participation

Informal learning techniques can be used to support eLearning or Formal online training very effectively. As a result, you will be able to multiply the impact of your Formal training.
